When you powder coat your iron, powder coat provides the best possible protection against weather that you can apply to steal. Being that powder coat is a significantly better coding process than paint, the number one corrosive force on the planet’s water, water made the Grand Canyon. We all know you would like to put the best possible protection on your investment which is powder coating. Paint provides very little protection against the weather is very fierce and pain is very easily scratched.
The first and most important thing you need to do for any powder coating job is to properly prep the materials before you apply the powder coat
So how do you properly prep the materials?
With any material you were going to powder coat, if it is bigger than a 1 ½” on one surface you should a braise the surface. A braise the surface means to take sandpaper, a Sander or you can have it sand blasted. That roughs up the surface, so the powder coat has something to adhere to and not peel off. Now if your surfaces are 1 1/2 inches or smaller you need to get a rag that does not leave small particles behind when you wipe with it, I recommend using white cotton cloth rags. You want to use some sort of a cleaning compound that will leave no residue when it dries, I recommend acetone. Apply the acetone to the white cotton rag and rub the surface that you are intending to powder coat, at this point you want to be extremely detail orientated you want to leave no dirt, oil, Greece or anything whatever you leave on the metal we'll go underneath the powder coat and ruin the finish. Typically, most fisheyes are from oil residue being left behind/missed. Then the next step is to make sure the material has had proper time to let the rest of the chemical dissipate. Now we are ready to apply powder coat, don't forget to attach the ground to the material. During the process of applying your powder coat if you happen to notice weird little circles/fisheyes, don't worry it is not that big of a deal but immediately stop applying the powder coat. You need to take a air hose and blow off all the powder coat, take a clean white rag and proceed to wipe off the material once you have removed all of the powder coat with the white rag you can now apply more of the acetone and wipe down the material again.
